In Case of Emergency (ICE) Tags for Hard Hat Workers: FAQs

Implementing a medical ID tag system at a construction site, or other hard hat environment demonstrates best practice and proactive safety management. Here are some FAQs our safety champions regularly answer about this life-saving device.

Are EMITAGs the Same as ICE Tags?

Yes. At Enfield Safety, our excellent value, lightweight and durable ID tags are marketed under the name EMITAGs. They do the same job as an ICE tag.

Why are Personal Medical Details So Helpful in an Emergency?

An efficient and well-informed response to an accident or acute medical condition greatly improves outcomes for causalities. Having the correct medical details on hand helps paramedics avoid misdiagnosis and allows effective treatment without delay. This can prevent minor emergencies from escalating and could even eliminate the need for a hospital trip.

Why Should Construction Workers Use Medical ID Tags?

It’s well known that construction sites and other hard hat settings are high-risk environments where accidents are more common. Sadly, construction remains the industry with the highest number of worker fatalities (30% of all workplace fatalities in 2017). What’s more, the construction industry relies on contract workers who change jobs and teams frequently. Knowing the medical information of someone working close by is even less likely than in an office setting.

Do First Responders Check for Medical ID?

Yes. Paramedics and first aiders are trained to look for medical ID on casualties. Whenever it is safe to do so, it will be one of the first things they do when arriving on the scene.

What Information Should Workers Detail on Their Tags?

Using the space provided, team members should include medical conditions, long-term prescription medications and known allergies. This information gives paramedics guidance for initiating treatment and lessens the chance of dangerous drug interactions. ICE tags should also provide emergency contacts/next of kin who you would wish to be notified in the event of an emergency.

Does an ICE Tag Have to Attach to a Hard Hat?

Hard hats are a good place to attach medical ID as it’s an easily visible location. However, for workers who don’t wear a hard hat consistently, EMITAGs can also be attached to an existing name badge or worker ID card. Bear in mind that first responders often can’t move a causality straight away when they arrive at a scene – make sure ID tags are displayed in a visible location so they can be accessed quickly.

Is an ICE Tag Easy to Fit?

Yes, it’s quick and easy for employees to fit an ICE tag to a helmet or ID card. It only takes a few minutes.

Are ICE Tags Waterproof?

Once attached to a hard hat, the hard-wearing glue forms a seal, making EMITAGs waterproof. No need to worry about getting caught in a downpour! Just remember to use a permanent marker to ensure your information stays clear and easy to read.

Are ICE Tags Expensive?

Investing in emergency ID tags for your hard hat workers is an extremely cost-effective method of safeguarding your team. For bulk purchases, the Enfield Safety EMITAGE costs as little as £1.27 per tag. Not a hefty price to pay for a potentially life-saving bit of kit.
